  • It’s so tasty. You’ll love how tasty these chips are as well as how easy they are to make.

What You’ll Need

Ingredients needed to make kale chips.
  • Kale — when picking kale, make sure you buy kale that looks fresh and crisp. Avoid kale that looks limp.
  • Olive oil — feel free to swap for avocado oil, coconut oil, sunflower oil, etc.
  • Ranch seasoning — optional seasoning, see more options down below!

What is Kale?

Kale is a vegetable from the mustard family, but most closely related to cabbage. Like cabbage, it’s leaves are very tough and can stand up to extreme temperatures–hot and cold. There are many different types of kale. The leaves can be green or purple, and have either a smooth or curly shape. You can eat kale all year round, and it can be eaten cooked of raw in meal and smoothies.

Is Kale Healthy?

Kale is among the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet. It is low in calories but full of many vitamins and minerals. Many powerful antioxidants are found in kale, including quercetin and kaempferol, which have numerous beneficial effects on health. Kale is extremely high in vitamin C. A single cup of raw kale actually contains more vitamin C than an orange.

How to remove the stem from kale leaves.

How To Make Air Fryer Kale Chips

  • Prepare the air fryer: Preheat air fryer to 375 F.
  • Prepare the kale: Meanwhile, wash the kale and dry very well. Remove the back stem and cut the leaves in 3 inch pieces. The kale will shrink.
  • Kale leaves ripped into smaller leaves.
  • Kale leaves in a bowl to turn into chips.
  • Season the kale: Transfer to a bowl and add the olive oil and seasoning. Massage the leaves with your hand to coat well.
  • Air fry: Arrange the leaves in a single layer in the air fryer and air fry for 3-5 minutes. For in batches and shake the basket once halfway through. Keep a close eye on them.

  • Enjoy: When done, remove and let them cool. Transfer to a bowl and serve to enjoy.

How to make Crispy Kale Chips in the Oven

  • Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F. Line a non stick cookie sheet with parchment paper. Use same steps mentioned above to prep the kale. Line the kale on the sheet pan, spacing the pieces part and bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes until edges are brown but not burnt.

Tips and Notes

  • It’s important to dry your kale completely. If you have a salad spinner, you should use it. If there’s water on the kale leaves, the oil won’t stick to the kale. Also the kale chips will steam in the air fryer instead of crisping up.
  • Overcrowding your air fryer basket with kale chips won’t allow them to crisp up properly. Air fry them in two batches if needed.
  • Don’t skip removing the stems. They’re tough and not very pleasant to eat.
  • Don’t add too much oil to the kale chips. If the kale chips are soaked in oil, they won’t crisp up very well.

FAQs

What other seasoning can I use?

You can season your kale chips however you like! Try some nutritional yeast, garlic powder, taco seasoning, grated parmesan cheese, lemon pepper seasoning, Everything Bagel Seasoning, and more! Popcorn seasoning works as well.

Can I make these ahead of time?

Kale chips are best eaten as soon as possible for them to be at their crispiest. However, you can store them 1-2 days if you wish, just be sure it’s in an airtight container. If they’re softer than you’d like, just add them back in the air fryer.

What type of kale should I use?

There’s a ton of kale! The common ones are Curly, Tuscan, and Dinosaur kale. You can use any type of kale to make kale chips.
